Union: Shutdown very successful

Published: Wednesday September 10, 2008

PRESIDENT of the Federation of Independent Trade Unions and Non-Government Organisations David Abdulah described Monday's plan for workers to shut down the country as a "very successful day".

He said yesterday that significant parts of the country had been shut down, and in other areas, there were significantly reduced levels of activity.

He said there was greater support for the action in South and Central Trinidad, though there was reduced activity in the Port of Spain area and in the East-West Corridor.

Teachers, taxi and maxi taxi operators and other workers participated in the protest.

Union umbrella body FITUN and the National Trade Union Centre (NATUC) organised the nationwide protest to highlight a number of issues, including crime and violence, rising food prices, neglect of agriculture, "runaway" inflation, absence of good governance, transparency and workplace problems.
