New minimum wage coming soon

Published: Friday September 19, 2008

Labour Minister Rennie Dumas said yesterday his ministry should soon be making a recommendation for a new minimum wage in T&T since a working committee has been established to look into the issue.

Dumas made the disclosure during the weekly post-Cabinet press conference at the Diplomatic Centre, La Fantasie, St Ann’s.

“On the issue of the minimum wage the committee having been established has begun its work and the minimum wage recommendation will hopefully come to us in pretty short order,” he said.

He said there could be proposal as soon as the mid- term.

“I have indication that consideration is being given to an interim proposal while the longer term methodology is worked out,” he said.

In February, Minister Dumas had announced the re-establishment of a Minimum Wages Board.
