Michael Whyte resigns from CMC

Published: Wednesday October 1, 2008

Michael Whyte has resigned as head of the Caribbean Media Corporation's (CMC) Commercial and New Business Development Manager. In confirming his resignation, he told the Business Observer that his resignation comes into effect on October 2, but refused to give further details, promising that he would elaborate on it at a later date.

Well-informed sources are of the view that with the highly successful coverage from a marketing point of view of the recently concluded Olynpics, Whyte's departure from CMC, was unexpected.

He has just recently landed a major deal in what was a very successful Olympic coverage. So from a marketing standpoint, his (Mikey Whyte's) departure from CMC at this point in time was unexpected," one source close to the media marketing specialist said. It is also understood that Whyte is presently considering his best option from two offers, one from Jamaica, and the other from Barbados which he already received.

With a solid resume from his experience in the Jamaican media, Mikey Whyte joined the organisation in April of 1998, as head of the newly formed Entertainment Department of regional news network, Caribbean News Agency (CANA) with its headquarters in Barbados. He has been instrumental in a number of the CMC's business ventures. Some of these included guiding the process which resulted in the creation of CaribVision, securing World Cup rights in 1999, 2000 and most recently 2007. In addition, securing the the first Caribbean radio broadcast rights for domestic first class and international cricket tournaments, which led to the birth of CricketPlus in 1998.

Having come a long way since his humble beginnings as a technical operator in 1974 with defunct Jamaica Broadcasting Corporation (JBC), over the years, Mikey Whyte, has developed a keen eye for identifying business opportunities as well as excelled at a number of professional challenges which included radio producer/presenter in 1977, acting station manager in 1980 and special events producer/presenter in 1981. Co-founder along with Ken Nelson of the entertainment agency Jampop, and former manager of the all female trio Ebony, last assignment in Jamaica was hosting the Power 106 FM Entertainment Line programme.
